Printing 3D models from Thingiverse in different colors and materials can certainly be fun, but have you ever stopped to consider the impact this plastic has on the environment?
A new Kickstarter campaign, Project PLA, might have you covered with its plan to recycle PLA 3D printing waste.
This waste, unlike common household waste, is difficult to dispose of in an environmentally-conscious manner. For starters, most recycling centers don’t accept 3D printing waste, which is classified as Class 7 plastic. But what of the claim that PLA is “biodegradeable”? Well, according to Engineering.com, “Though PLA is compostable and recyclable, calling it biodegradable would be a bit of a misnomer because composting the material requires an industrial composting facility, of which there are only 113 in the U.S.”
